The Bendigo Magazine Story
Quite often, we get asked “why?” So, here is Founder/Editor/Publisher, Amy Heath, to share the finer details:
“Growing up in Bendigo, I was desperate to escape! I always thought there was a much bigger and brighter world to experience. After moving away (and then back again!) and then being fortunate enough to travel overseas, I soon realised that Bendigo had an awful lot to offer.
“On a trip to the UK in 2003, I came across a few regional and city magazines. These magazines were bright, colourful, informative and interesting. Just as appealing to the tourist as to the local. I was hooked, to the point that I actually discarded shoes and clothing to accommodate the growing pile of magazines in my backpack!
“On my return to Bendigo, I also discovered that these “city magazines” existed all over the world – many had been regularly published for over 30 years. For the next year and half I mulled over the idea. During that period I shared my ideas with a few other people…business owners who said they would be prepared to support it; designers, writers and photographers who said they would be happy to get it started. So we did!
“The first issue was launched in December 2005 with 88 pages and a shiny, blue cover. Since then, we have passed the tricky one year mark and are going stronger than ever. From having no fulltime staff with that first issue (no, not even me…it was definitely a “love” job), to a full time staff of three, part time staff of three and more than 30 freelancers and contributors, we are continuing to grow. Our advertiser base has also grown, with many local businesses keen to support a 100% local publication.
“Our aim remains the same: to offer interesting and informative stories about the people and places in and around Bendigo and to have a positive forum for local people to share their successes and their pride in their city.”
